ITC Edwardian Script’s delicate, elegant letterforms were drawn and redrew numerous times until the connecting parts of the letters were flawlessly crafted to resemble real handwriting. Its appearance was designed by the way the steel-pointed pen, which can be pulled as well as pushed and provides stroke contrast when pressure is altered, looks when writing with it. Now with the knowledge of what fonts to avoid, I expect to cringe less when I am scrolling through my news feed or flipping through a magazine.ITC Edwardian Script, a calligraphic script with emotional, lyrical, and even passionate undertones was created by Edward Benguiat in 1994. No one will take you seriously if you use this font. No one should use this font and this font should be deleted from existence. I could go on and on about how much I hate this font, but I will stop to save you some reading time. If you do not hate this font then there is something wrong with you. This font is only okay if you live in the 90’s… which we live in 2015 so basically this font is not acceptable. ![]() The amount of people that hate this font is growing every second. You had to be expecting Comic Sans to be on the list.This font is public enemy #1. So please delete this font off your computer ASAP. I would not take any company seriously if they used this in an advertisement. The only people who should be using this font are history teachers or Egyptian museums. It has a texture to look like it is written on papyrus paper, which gives it a dated look. So if your company is in the wedding industry, I give you the green light to use this font. Script fonts are very romantic and proper. This font would only be acceptable for a wedding invitation, save the date, reminder, or program. This font would only be legible if it was very large, and most people do not use very large fonts. But the reason you should avoid it is because it is so hard to read because of the script. So avoid this font at all costs unless you fit in the guidelines I provided. The font is perceived as a cute font, and most companies or brands do not want to be cute. This font is dated and only acceptable if you are a daycare provider, teach grades preschool or kindergarten, or you are a 7 year old girl. Otherwise never use it in design intended for the public to see. These fonts are only acceptable if you use them as graphics in a design. Otherwise no one has the time to google the translation for these fonts. Unless you have somehow memorized these cryptic fonts, then you can leave yourself cryptic notes. These fonts are basically the same, so I clumped them together into one topic. So let’s begin the cringe-worthy trek through the top 5 fonts to avoid. This is why I am informing you of the top 5 fonts to avoid so I (and the rest of the world) won’t cringe when they see your designs. And as a designer myself I am very particular about the fonts I use and when I view designs with fonts that do not match the design I cringe inside. Or if a company is more proper, for an older generation, and generally does print advertising a serif font would work best. For example if a company is modern, active on social media, and for a younger generation a sans serif font would work best for the company. A font can also set the tone for a company or brand. Fonts can seriously make or break a design.
